The Club was set up in 1906, with the Earl of Derby as its first Chairman, as a section within the Association's athletics section. The first matches were played as "friendlies" before the Club joined the local league system. In 1914, following the outbreak of war, the Club experienced a temporary demise, which lasted until its re-formation in 1927. Thereafter the Club prospered and distinguished itself through the years, until, at the end of the 2012/2013 season, the decision was taken to wind it up, following unaffordable increases in running costs and a dearth of new players.

A brief History of the Club, prepared by Charlie Billington in 2013, can be seen here. An earlier version (Walters 1948) is available here.
