Annual Dinner
An excellent evening appeared to be had by all at the Swallow Hotel on Saturday 13th March. The guest speaker, Rear Admiral Myres, was in good form and the staff at the hotel did us proud as usual. Tony Olivine's guest, Colonel John Bird, has produced a rather fine cartoon which is worthy of display on the site and is reproduced here!
PNE Visit

On a cold winter Sunday, in spite of a bitter wind and frequent flurries of snow, 32 hardy souls, mainly from the Association, assembled in the National Football Museum. Trevor Sergeant, who had arranged the visit, divided the group into two smaller parties, each of which was led by a member of the Museum Staff on a conducted tour of the ground.

Most of those present had followed the fortunes of North End since their youth. Some were current season ticket holders and others were occasional visitors to Deepdale. Some had relatives who had been closely connected with the Club – one had a relative who had been a distinguished groundsman in the forties and fifties in the days when the ground was prevented from freezing by having lighted braziers on metal sheets ; another had a relative who had been a Director ; yet another had a father who used to supply the all-important half-time pies.

The guides were excellent. Not only were they extremely knowledgeable, but they imparted information in a brisk and friendly manner. They were approachable and patiently answered all questions without ever being patronising. The tour took us to parts of the ground that we had never seen. It was interesting to note the many differences between the Home and Away changing rooms in terms of space and facilities, and our minds drifted back to the facilities we knew down by the river at Walton.

We were not allowed on the pitch because it was cosily wrapped what was really a very large duvet, but we did get a sight of the impressive accommodation on the East side of the ground, and we revelled in the opportunity of going in the Directors’ Box and actually sitting in Sir Tom Finney’s seat. On our way back to the Museum, we visited the police section, and several had their photos taken in the cells.

It was then time for a delicious pie and a welcome hot drink. Most thought that this was the end of matters and represented tremendous value for the £2.50 we were charged. However, it turned out to be half time and one of the guides, Dave, took about a dozen of the party on a tour of the Football Museum. Whether this was planned, or an impromptu gesture, was not clear, but it was most enjoyable and we were very grateful because it provided us with the opportunity of visiting this splendid museum for what is likely to be the last time before it moves to Manchester. Whatever the rights and wrongs over closing the Grammar School, there is still some pain for those who went there, and, even after almost half a century, we still look back with nostalgia. The tour of the excellent National Football Museum served as a poignant reminder of what a wonderful facility is about to be lost.
The visit was a huge success and everyone enjoyed the tour. We enjoyed exploring areas of Deepdale that we had never seen and learning things about the Club, its history and organisation that we did not know, despite our association with North End over many years, and we are extremely grateful to the guides who showed us round.

Finally, we are indebted to Trevor Sergeant for masterminding such a splendid event which provided an opportunity for our Members to meet together in such interesting surroundings.
Barracks Visit
Don't forget - this will take place this Thursday evening (28th January), meeting at 6:30pm in the Sumner's.Funeral Arrangements - Skip Berryman
The funeral for Len "Skip" Berryman will take place at 11:15 am on Friday 29th January, at St Paul's Church, Scotforth, in Lancaster, and afterwards at the Crematorium. Brian McVann has suggested that it would be a nice gesture if Association members attending the funeral wore their Association tie (if they have one) rather than the customary black tie and also to wear their School Camp Badge if they were awarded one.Obituary
It is with great sadness that the Association has to announce the death of Len (Skip) Berryman who passed away on Sunday 17th January. He died peacefully at 6pm, surrounded by his family, at his home in Lancaster. His son, Michael, has been in contact with Brian McVann and is going to inform him of funeral arrangements. These will be posted here on the website as soon as I get them.A 2009 Success Story
Back in March Brian McVann got in touch with Charlie and, as a result, he sent me a newspaper cutting relating to an old boy, Ken Morley. The following are three extracts from the LEP which follow this saga throughout the year. (Ken, by the way, was a good footballer who played for Ribbleton, in the Dawson Cup, and also for PGS.)The Initial Story - March

A member of the Executive Council and former President of the Association is to be congratulated on celebrating his 60th Wedding Anniversary. More Autumn Golf Tournament Photos

The sun was shining. I’ll repeat that : THE SUN WAS SHINING, as 18 dedicated sportsmen flexed their muscles in an attempt to recapture the flexibility of yesteryear, prior to the second leg of the PGSA Biannual Golf Tournament which was held at Mere Brow on September 1 st.

Recent weather had been awful – gale force winds and rain of monsoon-like intensity and the summer sun was absent. However, on the Tuesday morning, the skies were blue, the sun shone, the wind was moderate, it was warm and we knew that the ground would be dry because this was Carrot Country.

There was a happy, nay almost euphoric, atmosphere around the first tee as the hour of ten o’clock approached and the eagerly Autumn leg of the PGSA, let’s dispense with the words “Golf Tournament”, was under way.

As usual, despite the smiles and good-natured banter, the competition was fierce and the quality of the golf was, judging by the scores, perhaps higher than it has been in recent years. For those of you who don’t know Mere Brow, it presents quite a challenge. Despite its flat nature, the ever-present wind and some of the subtle borrows on the greens combine to make low scoring difficult.

The silver PGSA Cup, for which Members compete so intensely, was won by Andrew Sumner with 20 points. He had the same score as Peter Whittam, but, sadly for Peter, he has the lower handicap and the “Rules” decree that ‘in the event of a tie, the winner is the person with the highest handicap’. Andrew will, therefore be “Custodian of the Chalice” until the Spring Tournament.

The internationally famous Framed Tenner was again won by Harry Moore with whom I had the privilege of playing. His pure ball striking and mastery of the wind were impressive, as was his winning score of 24 points off a handicap if 15.

Following the competition, we all enjoyed coffee and bacon barms and, judging by the laughter and smiling faces, most people seemed to have enjoyed the event. As organiser, I should like to thank all those who took part, particularly those who travelled long distances. I hope you feel that the journey was worthwhile.

I should also like to thank those who contacted me after the event, whether at Mere Brow or at my home, to say how mush I appreciate their comments. On your behalf, I should like to thank Mere Brow Golf Academy for the use of their facilities, The Café for their hospitality, and Harry Moore [again] for the masterly way in which he dealt with the scorecards.

I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Tournament, which we are about to rename The PGSA Masters !

Spring Golf Tournament
This took place at Garstang Golf and Country Club on 18th May 2009 and the following account of the day is provided by Tony Olivine, the Association's stalwart golf event organiser.Heavy rain driven by strong gusts of wind from the south west had fallen in savage bursts over recent days. This meant casual water covered much of picturesque setting of Garstang Golf Course when the fifteen participants of the Spring Tournament assembled in the Clubhouse and gazed out of the windows looking for a break in the clouds.
Dame Fortune smiled and, after a delay of only ten minutes from the advertised time, John Whalley stepped onto the first tee and the competition was under way.
Conditions were difficult and, although little rain fell, the combination of the strong gusts of wind, standing water and surprisingly slick greens with subtle and tricky undulations meant that most players found the course challenging. Despite this, there were some surprisingly good scores. All who took part can bask in the warm glow of having met with a difficult set of conditions and survived, comparatively unscathed, with heads held on high and with smiles of their faces.
As for the results, Richard Burrow again emerged as the clear winner of the much sought after Silver Cup which was presented to him by John Whalley, President of the Association. Richard won the trophy at Ingol in pouring rain and retained it at Garstang in similar conditions. Obviously the master in the wet, some Members were later seen in a corner praying that the next tournament would be played on dry ground so that they would have a better chance of prizing the trophy from his grasp. Well done, Richard, and thank you for keeping the cup so clean !

Harry Moore, a fine golfer, played well and won the coveted Framed Tenner by several strokes from the closely bunched Guest field. Apart from giving a master class to his playing companions, Harry returned to the clubhouse and dealt with the scorecards. John Whalley presented the Trophy and thanked Harry, a sentiment echoed by all present.

On behalf of the Association, I should like to apologise for the weather and to thank everyone for taking part, not forgetting Dick Bettess who acted as treasurer. Your cheerful involvement helped make the day a very happy occasion.

The following article comes from today's (19/06/09) Southport Visitor and refers to one of our Old Boys who is an active member of the Association. At 92 Eric is not only a tireless worker for the Royal British legion but is also a keen member of the Association, showing no fear of new technology. He was one of the first old boys to get in touch with us when the website was set up and continues to send in items of interest. This took place at the Swallow Hotel on Saturday 14th March and, despite travel problems caused by a traffic accident on the A59, had an excellent turnout. Father Timothy Lipscomb delivered some well chosen words which were well received by the audience and Stephen Sartin held everyone enthralled by a marvellous presentation on the origins of the School Houses; Goodair, Harris, Miller and Thornley. This was delivered in his usual inimitable style and contributed to an enjoyable and entertaining evening!One-off Golf Tournament

The Association regrets to announce the death of Fred Coulthurst, who died suddenly on 9th December 2008, aged 90 years. Don't forget - this takes place on Friday (that's this Friday) 28th November at Fulwood Conservative Club. Guests - both male and female - are very welcome. The cost is a modest £5 per head for an excellent hotpot supper followed by apple pie and cream. The location is easily accessible by public transport (on Blackpool Road close to the junction with Garstang Road) and there are excellent parking facilities. Don't worry if you haven't let Charlie (the Secretary) know if you are coming - we are fairly generous in our estimates for the catering so just turn up, you can pay at the event and there will be enough food! Come and support your Association in this Centenary Year. The event starts at 7:30 pm but you can arrive later - based on past experience you will still get fed even if you are an hour or so late!Autumn Golf Tournament 2008
The Second World War officially began on September 3 rd. It was also a very special date this year : besides marking the return to school for many pupils, it was my grandson Sebastian’s first birthday, the date that the final match against South Africa was abandoned after 18 balls and it also marked the Autumn Golf Tournament of Preston Grammar School Association in its Centenary Year.
At 11 am, despite the monsoon of the previous day and night, two-dozen stalwarts assembled at a waterlogged Ingol Golf Club. The group was a mixture of Old Boys of Preston Grammar School and ex-Quintarians from the halcyon days of Ingol Golf Club. They were strong, brave and determined. They had that light in their eye and horizontal rain and the threat of thunder was not going to deter them from giving of their best.
Details are boring. Results are interesting, though they seldom tell the whole story. Suffice to say that Richard Burrow, resplendent in the yellow of Thornley House, won the coveted PGSA silver cup by the narrowest of margins. Ken Moss of Ingol Golf Club by an equally narrow margin won the Famous Framed Tenner, the prize for guests. David Bunting of Miller House, not only was runner-up in the PGSA Competition, but he was the only competitor to manage a hole in two at the tricky 4 th hole, a feat which earned him two dozen golf balls.
Back in the warmth of the Clubhouse, the noble participants exchanged improbable tales of missed putts and unfortunate bounces and reminisced about their yesterdays. The room became positively soggy with nostalgia, but, judging from the laughter and the smiling faces, everyone seemed to enjoy the event.
Our thanks to all those who took part, to Harry Moore (Ingol) and David Bunting (PGSA) for interpreting the wet scorecards so ably, and to Ingol Golf Club for hosting the event and providing such excellent coffee and bacon barms to round off such an enjoyable day.

The Association regrets to announce the death of David Wilson who died on Saturday 18th October after a long illness. The following material is taken from the Lancashire Evening Post Sunday Football League Website:
Football Mourns LFA Vice-President David Wilson
The local Football and Cricket world is mourning the death of David Wilson who died on Saturday 18 October after a long illness.
David was an extraordinary worker for local sport in his home town of Preston and also in Lancashire. He was chairman of Broughton Amateurs Football Club and a Vice-President of the Lancashire Football Association where he had served as a council representative for the Preston area for many years. He was also the chairman of Preston Cricket Club.
LEP Sunday League Chairman Eamonn McNamara said, “David Wilson was a wonderful man who gave so much to football and cricket in this area and he was always prepared to assist us with help and advice whenever we had a problem.
Before David’s illness he was often to be found watching games in the LEP Sunday League and he helped many of our clubs achieve FA Charter Standard Status. I am sure that many of our club officials and players will remember David who was also a regular attendee at our monthly league meetings.
He was a devoted family man and our deepest sympathies go to his wife, son and daughter and his three grandchildren”.
The League requests that all clubs observe a minute’s silence before games next Sunday 26 October in David’s memory.

At 2 pm on Monday, May 19th, a dozen highly trained athletes assembled at Mere Brow, a rather flat, but deceptively tricky, nine hole golf course. The Members had come from far and wide to do battle for a prestigious piece of silverware, the PGSA Golf Trophy, and their guests had travelled just far to attempt to win the equally famous Framed Tenner. The weather was kind, as it usually is at Mere Brow and the competition was fierce, though good-natured. After and hour or so, Brian Stott emerged as the clear winner of The PGSA Cup. He was allowed to take it home with him on condition that he keeps it clean, has his name engraved on the base and returns it in time for the September Nine-Holer.
The winner of the Guest Competition for the Framed Tenner was Harry Hindle. He had the same score as Harry Moore, but, because Harry Hindle had the higher handicap, and because of the convoluted nature of our local rules, he was deemed to have won.
Rule 6 states, "Enjoy the event and have fun". I am pleased to report that, judging by the laughter, chat and banter as we tucked into bacon barms and coffee afterwards, Rule 6 was upheld.
This event was rather special in that we had two spectators - three if you count Keith Nightingale who does so much in the background to make things possible. Robin Robinson, a non-golfer, came along to join in the camaraderie, and his presence was much appreciated: not only did he know several Members, he also came across Harry Hindle, someone he had known for a long time, but hadn't seen for ages. It was nice to see Ronnie Moxon, someone who has won the Golf Trophy on several occasions. Although he said that he no longer plays, there was a feeling that he was looking at the opposition before making a comeback. I suspect that he departed in the knowledge that he has little to fear.
The winners have our congratulations and take away their deserved spoils of victory - they also should smile and note our envious glances. I should like to thank everyone who took part, not only Members who looked resplendent in close approximations to House Colours, but also to the Guests, especially Howard McCann, not only for dealing so ably with the legal side of the purchase of my first house in the early 60's, but for the masterly way in which he processed the scorecards.
As ever, we are grateful for the warm and friendly welcome from Mere Brow, even though plans are being developed to play the September version of this competition at another venue.

Visit to Fulwood Barracks Museum
A group of 17 Old Boys had a very enjoyable and informative visit to the museum at Fulwood Barracks on the evening of Thursday 24th January. This was arranged by Jim Bryson and was originally planned to last for an hour - we actually stayed for about two hours and barely scratched the surface!
Tony Olivine and Dick Bettess took some photographs of the visit and these are reproduced below.

The young lady in the photographs is the museum curator, who showed us round the museum and gave unstintingly of her time to make the visit as enjoyable as possible. The members attending were Mike Tyrer, Charlie Billington, Jim McDowall, Dave Sharp, Jim Bryson, John Paterson, Maurice Barker, Steve Turner, Bill Gardner, Tony Olivine, Ian Yates, Joe Hodgson, Alick Hadwen, Keith Hunt, John Whalley, Dick Bettess and Stan Struszczak. The group met up in the Sumners for a quick pint prior to the visit and the majority returned there afterwards to round off the evening.

Park School Old Girls' Association Centenary
The Centenary Dinner of the Park School Old Girls' Association is on Friday 19th October at the Barton Grange Hotel. With current bookings standing at 418 Members they have had to take the whole place over for the event! On the morning of Saturday 20th October their Centenary Service will take place at Preston Minster. In a letter to our immediate Past President, Tony Olivine, their Chairman, Elizabeth Smithies, extended an invitation to members of our Committee to join them for the Service. (She said that the original intention had been to send an open invitation to all Old Boys but they had been overwhelmed by the response from their own members.)
2007 Autumn Golf Tournament
It was a splendid sight: perfect weather, immaculate course and Members resplendent in close approximation of House Colours of yesteryear (those who could still remember what they were !).
The pleasing increase in attendance meant that we played as two 3-balls and one 4-ball, with Members competing for the PGSA Cup and visitors for The Framed Guest’s Tenner.
After an hour of reasonably competitive golf, during which everyone scored some points, we adjourned to the Clubhouse for coffee and a bacon barm whilst Mike Tyrer and Alan Facer worked out the results.
Perhaps fittingly, it was impossible to separate two competitors, Tony Olivine and David Bunting being declared joint winners with the former holding the trophy until the January Council Meeting. The winner of The Guest’s Tenner was Colin Mayland.
Members taking part :

Others involved : Dick Bettess who acted as Official Photographer and Keith Nightingale who was responsible for off-course arrangements.
I should like to thank all those who took part for helping to make the event so enjoyable and hope that, from our small beginnings, this fun event will continue to grow and flourish.

PGSA Golf Tournament 2007
You will be pleased to note that at 10 am on Monday, July 9th, six stalwart members of the Association assembled at Leisure Lakes Golf Course at Mere Brow and, half an hour later, made history by reviving the PGSA Golf Tournament after a 10 year break since it was last contested in 1997. The tournament had taken place every year since its inception in 1963 (except for one year - 1986) and we hope that it will now continue.
Mere Brow was chosen as it is flat and user-friendly, rather like a Park School girl I used to know and, to encourage entries, it was decided that the Competition would be a Stableford, full handicap and played over 9 holes. Further, in the event of a tie, the winner would be the person playing off the higher handicap. So, it was designed to be a low-key fun event. It initially attracted 9 entries, but this was before the date was fixed. Sadly, 3 were unavailable when the final date was chosen.
We set off as two 3-balls and worked our way round in a leisurely fashion. The golf was of a respectable standard and everyone scored some points, even those who had not played for some time.
After a most enjoyable hour or so, we ended around a table in the café where we enjoyed bacon barms and coffee whilst the results were worked out.
Perhaps fittingly, on this auspicious occasion, the winner was none other than the 2007 President of The Association, Mike Tyrer. Playing off a handicap of 24, he scored 22 points, 2 more than David Bunting, who played off 22, and Richard Burrow who played off 13.
So, a new name is to be added to the Trophy, which George Cook has so lovingly looked after since winning the last competition in 1997. I should like to thank all those who took part for making he event so enjoyable – Keith Nightingale, for his work behind the scenes, and the players David Bunting, Richard Burrow, Andy Sumner, Mike Tyrer and John Whalley.
I hope that this competition will again take place on a regular basis and that there will not be another 10-year gap in proceedings.
